Icarus

Hasselt (Belgium)
At the Quartier Bleu in Hasselt, an object is illuminated by an indirect sun, the heliostat. It is an instrument that uses a mirror to continiously reflect sunlight back to the same point throughout the day.
Planted in an urban renewal project, the installation questions the true needs of a residential community in an urban area. What amenities were emphasized in the design of the neighborhood and to what extent are they aligned with the current and future needs of the city's residents? Did a sustainable perspective was at the root of the complex challenges of the future? Icarus shows a snapshot of an insight that wishes to be permanent.
This work was created for and shown at the Theater Op De Markt Festival, a festival for contemporary circus, open air, and site specific theatre in the city of Hasselt in the province of Limburg (BE).
